Dover Ferry Photos Forum - Rules and Guidelines

Recent amendments are shown in Blue

Hi all,

Please find below the latest version of the `Dover Ferry Photos Forum Rules and Guidelines'. These rules have been set out to make the forums a better place for our members. I would just like to point out that we are not an authoritarian bunch, we are here to manage the forums for the benefit of ALL the members and not the FEW who wish to rock the boat.

Important Notes

:!: Your membership of this forum is taken as an acceptance of the rules posted below. If you do not agree with these rules and you are already a member please contact a member of the Administration team and your account will be deactivated and deleted.

:!: All the views expressed on our forums remain that of the poster and not necessarily that of the Dover Ferries Photos Group, its owners, it's moderators and it's administrators. All members should be aware of possible legal implications of posting libellous material on this forum. Please note that IP addresses are logged by our forum software for all messages posted on this website.

:!: In the event of a grievance occurring the administration team has the final decision on all forum content and moderation decisions and our decision is final.

:!: Members are reminded that internet hyperlinks ("links") offered from both this forum and our website http://www.doverferryphotos.co.uk, are outside the realms of our control. As a consequence the Dover Ferries Photos Group nor its owners, moderators and administrators are responsible for the content accessed via these links, you visit these other websites sites at your own risk.

:!: Some of our pages contain advertising links to selected ferry operators. These links are provided as an additional service to our visitors to enable bookings to be made and they also support the running costs of this website.

:!: All trademarks herein are the property of their respective owners. The only official connection we have with any of the companies featured is as an affiliate business partner, as such none of the companies featured have any editorial control over this website, it's content and any of the views and opinions expressed here.

Introduction

Originally launched in October 2006 the Dover Ferry Photos Forums were conceived as a community addition to our website Dover Ferry Photos. In May of 2009 the forums were re-launched on a new server following the failure of the previous host.

Our forum consists of 15 individual message boards each covering a specific subject. The scope of coverage for our forum is primarily the Ports of Dover, Ramsgate, Calais, Dunkerque, Boulogne, Ostend and Zeebrugge. We also offer a free talk and general maritime board for off topic discussions.

These forums are Administered by Ray Goodfellow and DoverT with the technical support of Paul Bilbrough. Your moderator team are Paul Cloke, Marconista and Aqui_fan. They are here to help you should you experience any problems.

Membership

 To view and post on our forums we kindly ask that you register an account with us. Membership is open to all but subject to Administrator approval. Please note that the approval process could take up to 24 hours to be completed.

 Please be aware that due to there association with spam registrations the following domains are banned from registering here; .biz, .org and .ru.

 All details submitted during the registration process are encrypted within our forum system. Your details will only be used for the process of forum Administration and will never be shared with a third party.

 When your account has been authorised by an administrator you will receive an email confirming that you now have access to the boards. You will need the user-name and password details that you submitted during the registration process (these should have been sent to you in a previous email).

 In an effort to prevent spam appearing on the system your first 5 posts will be set to moderator approval. This means your messages will not appear on the forum until they have been checked by a member of the moderation team. Once you have posted 5 messages this restriction will be lifted and you will be able to post normally.

 The moderated message list, known as the `moderator queue' is a tool used by the moderator team to manage those who may have breached forum rules in the past and to those who post outside of the guidelines set out in this document. Any member placed on this list will be unable to post messages directly to the boards until they have been approved by a member of the moderator team. In the event that a message is disapproved a reason will be forwarded to the member in question via a member of the moderator team. The Moderator Queue was introduced to help maintain the general standard of the forums and to prevent some of the idol `chit chat' that has taken over some threads recently. Please note members may be placed in the `moderator queue' without prior notification and the length of time they remain on the moderated list is dependent on there adhesion to the guidelines set out in this document

 In the event that you have forgotten your password please click here to retrieve it or contact an administrator. When contacting an administrator for assistance please could you supply us with the username and email address you used to register your account with us.

 Requests for membership can be refused or existing memberships terminated where there is the use of an inappropriate user name or email address where that name may be offencive or deceptive.

 The Administration team reserves the right to refuse membership requests without entering into any further discussions.

Who Are You?

 It is notoriously difficult to police the internet and it is rather pointless insisting on real names however if you wish to introduce yourself to the community please feel free to do so via the `Introduce Yourselves' board on the forums.

 Those working within the industry are reminded of their employer’s likely policies regarding confidentiality and public comment. Even though this forum is `membership only' it remains very much a public platform and your employer is not going to welcome you revealing information of a confidential nature. However, we do welcome public relations managers and other management figures who feel able to contribute to the discussions on behalf of their firm. For this reason, unless you are in a position where you are disclosing non confidential information or making comments your employer would not object to you should consider whether such posts are appropriate. Posting information under a `nom de plume' or forwarding the information to an administrator is possible but please take note of the above warning. This is a hobby after all and nobody wishes people to be faced with disciplinary action over a posting made here.

 No member shall identify, or attempt to identify, in public, the actual name of any member who uses a nom de plume. Any member who is deemed to be attempting this will receive a warning/ban.

 Any member who it is discovered is an employee of a ferry or cruise operator and is posting continual praise for their firm or criticism of another firm under a hidden identity may be subject to a warning/ban.

Message Content Guidelines

 Please try and ensure that your posting is placed in the right message board and remains on topic. In the event that your not sure where to place your message please indicate this in the subject line. Any threads that are deemed to be off topic will be either split, merged, moved, locked or deleted. If a message is deleted a private message will be sent to you by a member of forum staff explaining why this action has taken place.

 Please do not post the same question multiple times in multiple threads. If no one responds to your question or request please leave it 7 days and then press the `bump' button at the bottom of the thread and this will move your message back to the top of the desired board.

 This is primarily an English language forum, however we do accept postings in French and Dutch. For those who do not speak English as a first language you are still welcome to post. Provided the meaning of a message is clear the quality of English will not be criticised. Any member criticising such messages will be subject to a warning or ban. The use of on-line translators such as Google Translator or Babelfish are acceptable as long as a link to the original article is provided.

 Before posting a message please ensure, wherever possible, that the topic has not already been covered. Our forum offers an `Advanced Search Facility' which can be very beneficial when sourcing information or for new members who are joining us and posting for the first time.

 Please ensure that your posting is to the benefit of the overall community. We are not here for you to hold a private conversation, we are here to discuss the marine industry in Dover. If a member has taken the time to post a question or comment can you please consider your responses carefully. For instance can we not have a whole series of one line answers like "I agree" or "Yes". If you agree or disagree with a comment please state your reasons why, this is a discussion forum after all. You do not win any prizes for posting in such a manner and you receive no accolades for seeing your name on the internet. Any member deemed to be posting in such a manner will be subject to having there posts set to moderation approval preventing them from posting directly to the boards.

 AIS Observations - The use of internet based AIS has made it easier for us all to track shipping worldwide and is a valuable tool to both the industry and the enthusiast alike. When posting AIS observations to the boards we kindly ask that the sighting is of use and benefit to the whole community. For example the Port of Calais is closed and you note on AIS that the Pride of Burgundy has just entered the port of Calais, this is news worthy as it is obvious that the port has now re-opened. However we kindly ask that we don't have a whole page of forum posts saying "Oh the Pride of Calais is now sailing" and the Delft Seaways is doing this, that and the other. A large number of our members log in to get the latest information and the facts and this process is hindered when you have to wade through countless pages of AIS observations when we all have access to AIS.

 We do not mind people asking questions but please use some common sense before posing a question. For instance is the information freely accessible on the internet or via an internet search engine such as Google, Bing.com or Yahoo? If you can't find the answer please feel free to ask as we have a very knowledgeable membership, from maritime professionals to enthusiasts. Our boards offer an `Advanced Search Facility' which can be very beneficial when trying to source information.

 Postings here will not become an 'English exam', however, please take the time to preview your message before posting so the point your trying to make is clear. I can personally recommend IE Spell for spell checking in Internet Explorer.

 We kindly ask that you do not use `Text Message Language' in your postings, plain English only please. Any messages using this form of dialogue will be edited/deleted.

 Whilst posting we kindly ask that you do not use abbreviations. The abbreviations may seem obvious to you as the writer but they are not necessarily obvious to your fellow members.

 Please do not use excessively large font sizes, type in CAPITAL letters or use excessive punctuation such as exclamation marks (!!!!!) as this can be considered to be "shouting". Any such messages will be edited/deleted.

 Polls/Surveys are welcome in threads but please make sure they are relevant to the subject in hand. Any polls deemed to be irrelevant will be deleted and the users ability to create polls could be removed if this continually happens.

 If you are posting a news story please, where applicable, provide the source of the information. For example if you use a news story from the BBC website please provide the web site address of the article. This also applies when forwarding messages from another forum or news group. Please provide the name and website address of the other group (For example "Message taken from Ferries of Northern Europe http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/F ... ernEurope/")

 If your cross posting one of our news items to another website or group please provide the link to the original article on our forum in your posting. This is basic internet etequate.

 Internet Weblinks - Members are requested that any weblinks included in a post are relavent to the subject matter in hand. If you are planning on posting commercial links to our forum, for example to Ebay, it is essential that you contact myself, Ray Goodfellow via PM to obtain written permission first. In this instance if permission is granted you may post a message to the Weblinks board. I kindly ask that you state in your message that permission has been obtained from myself and that all enquiries be carried out off-list. Once your message has been posted the thread will be locked to prevent replies being posted. Any commercial links posted without permission could be considered as SPAM and may result in your account being suspended or deleted. Members are reminded of the previous disclaimer statement in regards internet hyperlinks ("links").

 Receive Only Radio Scanners - A radio scanner is a radio receiver that can automatically tune, or scan, two or more discrete frequencies stopping when it finds a signal on one of them and then continuing scanning when that frequency goes silent. Members are requested to make themselves acquainted with the OFCOM guidelines with regards to the use of radio scanners,

It is an offence if a person "otherwise than under the authority of a designated person:

…. uses wireless telegraphy apparatus with intent to obtain information as to the contents, sender or addressee of any message whether sent by means of wireless telegraphy or not, of which neither the person using the apparatus nor a person on whose behalf he is acting is an intended recipient."

This means that it is illegal to listen to anything other than general reception transmissions unless you are either a licensed user of the frequencies in question or have been specifically authorised to do so by a designated person.

      A designated person means:

      a.the Secretary of State;
b.the Commissioners of Customs and Excise; or
c.any other person designated for the purpose by regulations made by the Secretary of State.

It is an offence for someone, otherwise than under the authority of a designated person, to disclose any information as to the contents, sender or addressee of any message referred to in Offence 1. However, this does not apply where the disclosure is in the course of legal proceedings or for the purpose of any report of those proceedings. And, it does not apply where the information would have come to the person’s knowledge without the use of wireless telegraphy apparatus by him or by anyone else.
In essence this means that it is also illegal to tell a third party what has been heard in a transmission a person has listened to illegally. Please be aware of this when posting `scanner observations' to our forum.[/b]

 Our moderators reserve the right to edit or delete any posts they consider to be 'inappropriate' without warning.

 Please do not question an Administrators/Moderators decision on the forum. If you have an issue with a decision, either contact an Administrator or the Moderator in question via email or the forums Private Message (PM) facility.

 Do not post any adult content. Do not make inappropriate or offencive posts - including threats, harassment, swearing (this includes disguising letters in swear words), prejudice, slander, racism, deliberate insults or any other negative remarks about any other member, group or company.

 TROLLING is prohibited here and will not be tolerated. Trolling is whenever someone is deliberately posting in a manner for the purpose of angering and/or insulting the other participants of the board. Trolling does not encourage further discussion, in the long run it only encourages personal attacks. Any member acting in this manner will face there membership being revoked.

 If you see a post that you believe to be inappropriate or be an attempt at Trolling please click the `Report' button Image. This will notify the moderator team so the post can be reviewed and any action taken.

Photographic Posts & Video Posts

As a forum built on the back of a photographic website we welcome members photographs to be posted to our forum. A board has been set up for this specific purpose entitled the `The Dover `Photo' Patrol'.

Following feedback from our membership we have now also set up a dedicated video board entitled the `The Dover `Video' Patrol'. Please feel free to post all your YouTube and video links to this board.

 When posting to the The Dover `Photo' Patrol board we kindly ask that you state the date and location in the subject line of your message.

 Please try not post an excessive number of photographs per post. If you have a large number of photographs that you think members may be interested in seeing there are plenty of websites such as Shipspotting and Ships Nostalgia to host your images on then you can post a link to them here.

 Ideally please do not post anymore than 15 pictures per post. I am willing to be lenient on this if the content is relevant, we don't want to see 20 images of the same vessel taken a few seconds apart.

 Our forum offers an attachment facility to enable you to upload your photographs directly to the forums. There is currently a limit of 3 attachments per post and 1 attachment per private message. Images up to 1MB in size can now be posted. If you wish to use a photographic hosting service as per the old forum you still can. A few examples of which are listed below:

    PhotoBucket
    ImageShack
    PostImage
    Flickr

 Please respect your fellow members as those not connecting to the site via a broadband connection may experience slow page loading times and excessive data charges if doing so via a mobile connection.

 If your posting photographs via a photographic hosting service such as Photobucket please don't post photographs bigger than 1024x768 pixels. If you are using our forums attachment facility there is no pixel size limit as the system automatically creates a thumbnail image.

 Please make sure your photographs/videos are relevant to the subject matter in hand.

 Please do not use images obtained from the Internet unless you have the permission of the copyright holder to use them. If permission is granted please state the name of the copyright holder in your post. Copyright theft is rife on the internet nowadays and we don't wish to be party to this by hosting such images on our server.

 Please do not use photographs from this forum or our website for further publication without obtaining the permission of the photographer/copyright holder first. I have noted a number of `our' images on Facebook recently which have been `borrowed' without permission. In future I will be watermarking all of my own photographs uploaded to our website, this forum and our Facebook account and Facebook fan page.

 If you find a picture on the internet that may be of interest to other members please post a link to the website in question and provide the name of the website and where possible the name of the photographer/copyright holder.

 We welcome comments to be left on the `Dover `Photo' Patrol' and `Dover `Video' Patrol' boards with regards to members photographs and videos but can we not have a whole series of one line posts like "Great Photos/Videos". If you would like to leave feedback to the poster please put a bit of thought into your response. For instance, why is is a great photo/video?, What does it mean to you? As I stated before, this is a discussion forum not a personal blog site and one word responses will be deleted.

Forum Abuse, Private Message and Email Abuse Policies

 All Moderation decisions/actions are to be carried out `off list' via use of the forums in built warning and moderation system. This will be backed up by Private Messaging and/or email.

 If you receive a Private Message (PM) from a moderator with regards to an action that has taken place on the forum a response is required to acknowledge the receipt of the message. Failure to acknowledge a moderator may result in your account being suspended.

 Please remember that `Private Messages' received on these Forums are to be considered private and are not to be posted publicly unless the sender of the private message agrees. This rule does not apply to PM's relating to Moderation decisions which may be forwarded to the sites administrators for dispute resolution purposes and general board management.

 We take PM/email abuse very seriously, and it will result in the immediate removal of your membership and ban of your IP address, without warning.

 As a member you agree to report any member whom you feel to be in violation of these rules to the Administration/Moderator team immediately via PM, Email or by clicking the `Report' button Image.

If all users abide by these rules I am positive the forums will be a much better place for all our members.

Regards,

Ray Goodfellow, DoverT, Aqui_fan, Paul Cloke and Marconista.

Registered forum members can view a copy of the rules here. We kindly ask that you read and agree with these rules before signing up for an account.
